Lieutenant, British Army
Lieutenant John Steel "Jock" Lewes was a British Army officer who served during World War II. He is best known as the founding principal training officer of the Special Air Service (SAS), a unit that would revolutionize special operations. The founding commander of the SAS, David Stirling, famously remarked that Lewes could far more genuinely claim to be the founder of the unit than himself.
In addition to his foundational training and leadership roles, Lewes was a highly practical innovator for the regiment. He invented an explosive device specifically designed for SAS sabotage operations, which became known as the eponymous Lewes bomb. His tactical ingenuity and training methods laid the groundwork for modern special forces operations.
