Quartermaster Sergeant, U.S. Army
Joel H. Lyman was a Quartermaster Sergeant in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Serving with Company B of the 9th New York Cavalry, he demonstrated exceptional bravery during the conflict, particularly at the Battle of Winchester, Virginia, in the autumn of 1864.
On September 19, 1864, during an engagement at Winchester, Lyman attempted to capture a Confederate flag. In the course of this daring action, he succeeded in capturing a Confederate officer and safely brought him back within the Union lines.
For his gallantry and decisive actions during the battle, Lyman was awarded the Medal of Honor. The medal was officially issued to him on August 20, 1894, cementing his legacy as a Civil War hero.
