Chief Boatswain, U.S. Navy
John Edward Murphy was a United States Navy sailor who served during the late 19th century. He achieved the rank of Chief Boatswain during his naval career and is best remembered for his conspicuous gallantry during the Spanish–American War.
For his heroic actions during the conflict, Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States of America's highest military decoration for valor. His courage under fire remains a distinguished part of the U.S. Navy's historical legacy during the Spanish–American War era.
