John Manners Smith

Lieutenant-Colonel John Manners Smith was a highly distinguished British officer who served in both the Indian Army and the Indian Political Service. He spent much of his career on the rugged frontiers of the British Raj, participating in various military campaigns and political missions that secured regional stability during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

He is best remembered for his conspicuous bravery during the Hunza-Nagar Campaign in 1891. His extraordinary leadership and courage under fire during the assault on a formidable enemy position earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy available to British and Commonwealth forces.

In addition to his combat valor, Manners Smith was a respected diplomat and administrator in the Indian Political Service. His dedicated service to the British Empire was further recognized with appointments to prestigious chivalric orders, cementing his legacy as both an outstanding soldier and a capable colonial administrator.
