John Mapes Adams

John Mapes Adams was born on October 11, 1871, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Marine Corps historical records identify his birth name as George Lawrence Day.

He served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the China Relief Expedition. On July 13, 1900, he distinguished himself in the battle near Tientsin, China. His Medal of Honor citation recognizes meritorious conduct in the presence of the enemy, without specifying individual tactical actions.

Adams died on January 6, 1921, at Fort Wadsworth, New York, and is buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn. His Medal of Honor preserves the record of his service during the fighting in China.
