Sergeant, U.S. Army
John May was an American soldier in the United States Army who served as a Sergeant with the 6th U.S. Cavalry. He is best known for his actions during the Texas-Indian Wars, which occurred during the late 19th century in the American West.
On July 12, 1870, May was involved in a fierce engagement against the Kiowa tribe at the Battle of the Little Wichita River in Texas. Displaying exceptional gallantry under fire, he was among a group of thirteen men who distinguished themselves during the combat.
For his actions of gallantry during the battle, Sergeant May was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration. His courage during the Texas-Indian Wars remains a notable part of the history of the 6th U.S. Cavalry.
