Corporal, British Army
John McDermond VC was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He served as a Corporal in the British Army during the mid-19th century.
He is famously associated with the Battle of Inkerman, during which he performed the actions that earned him the Victoria Cross. Along with John Byrne, his medal is one of the few from that historic engagement that remains unaccounted for in official collections.
In recent years, interest in McDermond's legacy was renewed when a Victoria Cross medal dating from the Battle of Inkerman was discovered in the mud of the River Thames, sparking speculation that it could belong to either McDermond or Byrne.
