John Francis David Shaul

Band Sergeant John Francis David Shaul followed a proud family tradition of military service when he enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry in 1888. Over his long career with the British Army, he served in various global hotspots, including Malta, the North West Frontier of India, Crete, and South Africa. He distinguished himself through exceptional gallantry and dedication during these deployments, particularly in his role managing medical evacuations under intense enemy fire.

During the Second Boer War, at the Battle of Magersfontein on December 11, 1899, Shaul displayed extraordinary courage while under fire. Tasked with managing stretcher-bearers, he repeatedly ventured into the fire zone to rescue wounded soldiers, dress their wounds, and maintain order. At nightfall, he remained alone in the brush to protect and care for a severely wounded officer until help arrived at dawn. For these actions, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Following his service in South Africa, Shaul continued his military career as a band sergeant and bugle major, eventually retiring in 1909. He later relocated to South Africa but returned to military service during World War I, joining the 5th South African Infantry Regiment in East Africa before being medically discharged. He spent his final decades in Boksburg as a military bandmaster, passing away in 1953.
