Major, British Army
Major John Simpson Knox was a Scottish officer in the British Army who became a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He distinguished himself through outstanding bravery during the Crimean War, a conflict in which he ultimately suffered the partial loss of his left arm due to a Russian cannonball during the assault on the Redan.
In addition to his Victoria Cross, Knox was also appointed to the French Legion of Honour, reflecting the allied nature of the Crimean campaign. His decorations and the very cannonball that wounded him remained historic artifacts of his service and sacrifice.
His Victoria Cross and associated campaign medals, along with the French insignia and the cannonball, were preserved together for generations. In April 2010, this historic collection was sold at auction to an anonymous buyer for a record sum, ensuring his legacy as a Crimean War hero remains recognized.
