Biography

He crossed enemy lines to bring relief to besieged comrades.

Joseph A. Nolan was born on 20 January 1857 in Elkhart, Indiana. He served as an artificer in Company B, 45th Infantry, United States Volunteers during the Philippine conflict.

On 29 May 1900 at Labo on Luzon, Nolan voluntarily left shelter, crossed enemy lines at considerable personal risk and brought relief to comrades under siege. The action earned him the Medal of Honor, awarded on 14 March 1902.

Nolan died on 19 August 1921 in Niles, Michigan. He is buried there in Silverbrook Cemetery. His citation records the decisive assistance he brought to an isolated group of fellow soldiers.
