Captain (Army) Major (Retired list), U.S. Army

Joseph A. Sladen was an officer in the United States Army who served during the American Civil War and the American Indian Wars. A Union Army veteran, he distinguished himself during the 1864 Battle of Resaca, an action for which he was later awarded the Medal of Honor.
Following the Civil War, Sladen continued his military career, participating in several campaigns of the American Indian Wars. He eventually retired from active duty due to disability in 1889.
After his retirement, Sladen settled in Portland, Oregon, where he served as a clerk of the United States Circuit Court. He lived there until his death, after which he was buried at the West Point Cemetery.
