He guided Army patrols during the winter's Apache campaigns.
Kelsay was an Apache scout who served with the United States Army in Arizona Territory during the Indian campaigns. His surviving military recognition records him by that single name. He was associated with the Indian Scouts employed alongside the 5th Cavalry during the winter of 1872–73.
The scouts supplied local knowledge, tracking ability and practical experience that regular cavalrymen needed when operating across the difficult country of Arizona. Kelsay's Medal of Honor citation recognized gallant conduct during campaigns and engagements with Apache opponents over that winter.
The award was issued in April 1875, after the campaign it recognized. His documented participation in the Arizona operations of 1873 also falls within the service for which the Indian Campaign Medal was later authorized.
A memorial at Fort Apache preserves his name among the Indian Scouts who received the Medal of Honor for the early 1870s campaigns. It records the service of Native soldiers whose work with the Army formed part of a complicated conflict within their own region.
