Private first class, U.S. Army
Leonard Martin Kravitz was an American soldier in the United States Army who served in the Korean War. Serving as a private first class, Kravitz was a machine gunner whose position came under heavy attack by enemy forces during a critical engagement in the war. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism in defending his unit.
Kravitz originally received the Distinguished Service Cross, which was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor in 2014 following a congressional review of Jewish-American veterans who may have been bypassed for the nation's highest military decoration due to prejudice. His actions allowed his comrades to withdraw safely.
His legacy remains highly respected, and he is remembered alongside other Korean War heroes for his ultimate sacrifice. He was also awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and several service medals for his combat operations in Korea.
