Sergeant, U.S. Army
Leroy A. Mendonca was a soldier in the United States Army who served during the Korean War. Serving at the rank of Sergeant, he distinguished himself through acts of conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, ultimately leading to the posthumous award of the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951.
In addition to the nation's highest military decoration for valor, Sergeant Mendonca was also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat. His sacrifice and dedication to duty remain a profound example of American military heroism.
To honor his legacy and memory, the Military Sealift Command commissioned the Bob Hope-class roll-on/roll-off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca (T-AKR-303) in 2001, ensuring his name continues to serve the nation he defended.
