Colors in hand, he rallied a fleeing line in the Wilderness!
Leopold Karpeles was a sergeant and color bearer in Company E, 57th Massachusetts Infantry, reaching the rank of color sergeant. During the Wilderness Campaign in Virginia on 6 May 1864, he rallied retreating Union troops and helped stop the Confederate advance. The Medal of Honor was presented on 30 April 1870. Born in Prague on 9 September 1838, he died in Washington, D.C., on 2 February 1909 and was buried at Hebrew Congregation Cemetery. The recipient profile does not document his prewar occupation.
