Musician, U.S. Army
The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is bestowed on members of the United States armed forces who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their lives above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.
During the American Civil War, many of the Medals of Honor were awarded to soldiers and sailors for capturing or saving regimental flags. In this era of warfare, regimental flags served as crucial rallying points and guided unit movements on the battlefield.
Because of the vital tactical importance of these banners, losing a flag could severely disrupt a unit's cohesion and morale, often having a more devastating impact on the regiment's performance than the loss of its commanding officer.
