Saddler Sergeant, U.S. Army
Loron Franklin Packard was an American soldier who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. At just 18 years of age, Packard enlisted in the 5th New York Cavalry Regiment on August 29, 1861, at Haskell Flats, New York. Sworn into federal service on August 31, he was assigned to Company E, where he began his military service as a Private.
During his service, Packard distinguished himself through acts of conspicuous gallantry during the Mine Run Campaign in Virginia. On November 27, 1863, during a reconnaissance mission at Racoon Ford, Packard engaged in a skirmish with Confederate forces. In a display of extreme bravery, he returned to the field to successfully rescue a fellow soldier who had been taken prisoner by the enemy.
In recognition of his valor, Packard was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration. He was eventually promoted to the rank of Saddler Sergeant before being mustered out of the army on July 19, 1865, at Winchester, Virginia, following the conclusion of the war.
