Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps
Luther Skaggs Jr. was a United States Marine who served with distinction during World War II. He is most notable for his heroic actions on the beachhead during the Battle of Guam, where he demonstrated extraordinary courage and leadership in the face of intense enemy opposition.
While serving as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, Skaggs was critically wounded during the campaign but continued to defend his position and direct his men despite his severe injuries. His selflessness and devotion to duty under fire prevented the enemy from penetrating the American lines.
For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Skaggs was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was also a recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.
