Gunner's Mate Third Class, U.S. Navy
Martin Torinus Torgerson was an American sailor serving in the United States Navy who distinguished himself during the Boxer Rebellion, a major anti-foreign and anti-Christian uprising in China at the turn of the 20th century.
While serving as a Gunner's Mate Third Class, Torgerson demonstrated exceptional bravery in the presence of the enemy during the relief expedition of June 13 to 27, 1900. For his actions of extreme courage and devotion to duty, he was awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
Following his distinguished naval service, Torgerson left a legacy as one of the key naval heroes of the Boxer Rebellion. His courage under fire remains an exemplar of the values of the United States Navy.
