Sergeant, U.S. Army
Martin Wambsgan was a German-born Union Army soldier who served as a Sergeant during the American Civil War. He is best remembered for his conspicuous gallantry during one of the conflict's most pivotal engagements in the Shenandoah Valley.
On October 19, 1864, Wambsgan participated in the Battle of Cedar Creek near Middletown, Virginia. This decisive confrontation was the largest battle fought in the Shenandoah Valley and served as the climax of Major General Philip Sheridan's Valley Campaigns of 1864.
For his exceptional bravery and gallantry during the battle, Sergeant Wambsgan was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States military's highest decoration for valor. His actions contributed to the decisive Union victory that permanently neutralized the Confederate threat in the Shenandoah Valley.
