Private, British Army
Michael Wilson Heaviside was an English soldier of the British Army who became a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He served as a Private in the Durham Light Infantry. His historic bravery was recognized by his community with a celebratory "Welcome Home" parade through the streets of Stanley and Craghead following his actions. His family later presented his medal to his regiment's museum during a ceremony at Brancepeth Castle.
His Victoria Cross and other service medals were historically displayed at the Durham Light Infantry Museum and Durham Art Gallery to honor his legacy. Following the museum's closure, his medals and the associated regiment collection were relocated to a facility in Spennymoor.
