Chaplain, U.S. Army
Milton Lorenzo Haney was an American Methodist minister who served as a regimental chaplain in the United States Army during the American Civil War. Known as the "Fighting Chaplain," Haney was attached to the 55th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
He is most famous for his actions during the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. When the Union line was breached by Confederate forces, Haney voluntarily took up a rifle and joined the ranks in a fierce counterattack, helping to retake the lost ground and inspire the men under intense fire.
For his extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry at Atlanta, Haney was awarded the Medal of Honor. Following the war, he returned to his ministerial duties and remained an active and respected figure in his community, leaving behind a legacy of devout faith and battlefield bravery.
