Milton Matthews was an American soldier who fought in the American Civil War. He served as a Private in the United States Army, entering service from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During his service, he demonstrated exceptional bravery under fire, earning the nation's highest military decoration for valor.
Matthews's actions at the Third Battle of Petersburg, Virginia, on April 2, 1865, distinguished him among his peers. During the fierce fighting, he successfully captured the battle flag of the 7th Tennessee Infantry. He was one of six members of his regiment to earn the Medal of Honor for heroic actions that day.
Matthews survived the war and was officially honored with the Medal of Honor on May 10, 1865. In his later years, he relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he lived out his remaining days.
