Biography

Seized a regimental flag from the enemy at a rail station.

First Lieutenant Morton A. Read served in Company D, 8th New York Cavalry. At Appomattox Station, Virginia, on 8 April 1865, he captured the flag of the 1st Texas Infantry. He received the Medal of Honor on 3 May 1865. CMOHS records his birth in Brockport, New York, in 1843, death in Danville, Illinois, on 10 July 1921, and burial at Danville National Cemetery. The cited recipient record does not establish his prewar occupation.
