Acting Naik (British Indian Army) Jemadar (Indian Army), Indian Army
Jemadar Nand Singh was a highly distinguished Indian soldier who served in both the British Indian Army and the post-independence Indian Army. He achieved unique distinction in the annals of military history for his extraordinary gallantry across two major conflicts of the mid-20th century.
During World War II, while serving as an Acting Naik in the 1st Battalion, 11th Sikh Regiment, British Indian Army, he led a daring assault on a Japanese position in Burma. Despite being wounded in multiple places, he single-handedly captured key trenches under heavy fire, an action for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Following India's independence, he continued his service with the Indian Army. During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, he was mortally wounded during a fierce engagement in Jammu and Kashmir. For his supreme sacrifice and battlefield bravery during this conflict, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest military decoration.
