Acting Subedar, British Indian Army
Acting Subedar Netrabahadur Thapa Magar VC was a Nepalese Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross. He served during World War II with the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles (Frontier Force) of the Indian Army, which was then part of the British Indian Army.
He received the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, for his actions on 25–26 June 1944 at Bishenpur, Manipur, India.
His exceptional bravery and leadership in defending a vital hillside position against overwhelming Japanese forces, until he was mortally wounded, secured his legacy as one of the most revered heroes of the Commonwealth forces during the conflict.
