Captain, U.S. Army
First Lieutenant Orson W. Bennett was an American soldier who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was assigned to the 102nd United States Colored Infantry, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership and courage during one of the war's notable engagements.
On November 30, 1864, during the Battle of Honey Hill in South Carolina, Bennett performed the action that would earn him the nation's highest military decoration. Under heavy enemy fire, he distinguished himself by successfully retrieving several artillery pieces that were in danger of capture by Confederate forces, preserving critical military assets and inspiring his men under intense pressure.
For his gallantry and intrepidity during the battle, Bennett was officially awarded the Medal of Honor several decades later on March 9, 1887. His actions remain a testament to the bravery demonstrated by officers and soldiers of the United States Colored Troops during the conflict.
