Biography

His scouting and cavalry service earned him a Medal of Honor

Patrick Golden was born in County Sligo, Ireland, in 1836. He served as a first sergeant with Company B, 8th United States Cavalry.

In April 1867 he took part in Captain James M. Williams’s scouting expedition in Arizona. An Army museum history names Golden among the sergeants guarding the horses during an encounter on April 17. The same expedition continued fighting the next day.

Golden earned the Medal of Honor for bravery in scouting and combat near the Black Mountains in Arizona. The recorded action date is 13 August 1868, and the medal was awarded on 24 July 1869. His citation recognizes the service without detailing a particular encounter.

Golden died on 25 May 1872 at Fort Columbus, New York. He is buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn.
