Flight Lieutenant, Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve
Robert Hampton "Hammy" Gray was a Canadian naval officer, pilot, and recipient of the Victoria Cross during World War II. Serving with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, he became one of the most prominent Canadian naval figures of the conflict. He and Eugene Esmonde hold the unique distinction of being the only personnel of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm to be decorated with the Victoria Cross during the second world war.
Gray's service as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm culminated in his heroic actions in the Pacific theater. His determination and courage during aerial operations earned him the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy. To this day, Gray holds the solemn distinction of being the last Canadian to be awarded the Victoria Cross, cementing his place in Canada's military history.
His legacy is preserved through numerous memorials and his recognition as a symbol of Canadian and Commonwealth naval aviation bravery. His actions remain a point of pride for both the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm.
