Boatswain's Mate, U.S. Navy
Robert M. Blair was a sailor in the United States Navy who served during the American Civil War. He was born in Maine and entered the naval service to fight for the Union. His dedicated service during the conflict culminated in his actions during a major amphibious assault late in the war.
On January 15, 1865, Blair participated in the Second Battle of Fort Fisher in North Carolina. Serving as a Boatswain's Mate, he was part of the assault force that successfully captured the Confederate stronghold. His exemplary conduct and bravery during the intense engagement earned him the nation's highest military decoration.
Following his wartime service, Blair was recognized for his heroism under fire. His legacy remains preserved as one of the Navy's distinguished Civil War veterans who gallantly answered the call of duty during one of the most significant naval assaults of the conflict.
