Robert Wesley Ammerman

Stormed Spotsylvania's works and seized a rebel battle flag

Robert W. Ammerman entered the fighting at Spotsylvania as a private and came out carrying an enemy battle flag. Serving with Company B, 148th Pennsylvania Infantry, he was among the foremost men in the Union assault of 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia.

The attack carried him into the Confederate position, where he captured the flag of the 8th North Carolina Infantry. His conduct in the assault and the seizure of the colors brought him the Medal of Honor.

Among the foremost in the assault at Spotsylvania, Ammerman captured the battle flag of the 8th North Carolina Infantry.

Ammerman was born in 1841 in Centre County, Pennsylvania. He survived the war and lived into the opening years of the twentieth century. He died on 30 September 1907 at McAlisterville, Pennsylvania, and was buried in Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery.
