Samuel Everett Pingree

Led men across a creek into trenches despite severe wounds.

Samuel E. Pingree led from the front at Lee's Mills, crossing a deep creek into enemy rifle pits and remaining with his men after being wounded. A captain in Company F, 3rd Vermont Infantry, he took part in the assault at Lee's Mills, Virginia, on 16 April 1862.

Pingree led his company across the wide, deep stream and drove Confederate troops from their rifle pits. He remained at the head of his men until he was wounded a second time. His leadership and personal courage earned him the Medal of Honor.

Born at Salisbury, New Hampshire, on 2 August 1832, Pingree continued to advance in rank during the war and CMOHS records colonel as his highest rank. He died on 1 June 1922 and was buried in Hartford Cemetery at White River Junction, Vermont.
