Captain, New Zealand Army
Samuel Frickleton was a distinguished soldier in the New Zealand Military Forces who served during the First World War. He was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, for his exceptional bravery during the conflict.
Following his wartime service, Frickleton continued his involvement with the military and was later awarded the Efficiency Decoration. His military service and legacy remain an important chapter in New Zealand's military history.
In 1977, Frickleton's wife donated his Victoria Cross along with his other service medals and coronation medals to the National Army Museum in Waiouru. Although these irreplaceable decorations were stolen during a major museum heist in December 2007, they were successfully recovered in February 2008 following a significant reward offer.
