Private, British Army
Samuel Parkes VC was an English soldier in the British Army who served in the 4th Light Dragoons (later the 4th Hussars). He is best known for his actions during the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War, where his conspicuous bravery earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy.
During his service in the Crimean War, Parkes fought in the Battle of Alma and the Battle of Balaklava, during which he was taken prisoner by enemy forces. His gallantry on the field of battle was officially recognized by Queen Victoria, who personally presented him with his Victoria Cross in 1857.
In addition to the Victoria Cross, Parkes was decorated with the Ghuznee Medal for his earlier service, alongside the British Crimean War Medal with multiple campaign clasps and the Turkish Crimean Medal. His medals have a complex history, having been sold, duplicated, and eventually reunited for display within the Lord Ashcroft collection at the Imperial War Museum.
