Biography
At Brooklyn's conn, he steered through Mobile Bay's inferno!
Samuel Todd stood at a critical station aboard USS Brooklyn as the Union fleet forced its way into Mobile Bay on 5 August 1864. Serving as quartermaster, he was at the conn while forts, Confederate vessels and underwater mines made the passage one of the most dangerous naval operations of the Civil War.
Under severe enemy fire, Todd displayed the skill, courage and steadiness required to help keep Brooklyn under control during the battle. His conduct earned the Medal of Honor.
