Biography
Cool head aboard Lackawanna amid Mobile Bay's fiery storm!
Samuel W. Kinnaird was a landsman aboard USS Lackawanna when Farragut's fleet fought through Mobile Bay on 5 August 1864. With the ship exposed to forts and Confederate gunfire, Kinnaird remained at his duties through one of the war's fiercest naval engagements.
His Medal of Honor citation emphasized his presence of mind and the example his conduct set for the men around him. He continued to serve gallantly while the battle raged.

Aboard USS Lackawanna at Mobile Bay, Kinnaird displayed presence of mind and served gallantly under enemy fire.
Kinnaird was born in New York City, although authoritative sources disagree on whether the year was 1840 or 1843. He later held the rating of ordinary seaman. He died on 20 April 1923 at South Berne, New York, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery at Woodside, New York.
