First Sergeant, U.S. Army
Sandford Bradbury (1840–1911) was a United States Army First Sergeant who served in Company L of the 8th U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars. He is most notable for receiving the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his courageous actions in the Arizona Territory.
On July 3, 1869, near Hells Canyon in the Arizona Territory, Bradbury distinguished himself through outstanding service. His actions during the engagement led to his recommendation for the prestigious award, which was officially issued to him on March 3, 1870.
His official citation commends his conspicuous gallantry in action, marking him as a key figure in the frontier campaigns of the post-Civil War era. After his military service, he lived until 1911, leaving behind a legacy of distinguished service in the American Southwest.
