Breaking barriers to lead Britain’s Armed Forces into history
General Dame Sharon Patricia Moffat Nesmith DCB made British Army history in June 2024 when she became its first serving woman promoted to four-star general. Appointed Vice Chief of the Defence Staff and Aide-de-Camp General to King Charles III, she reached the highest levels of military leadership through a career spanning operational communications, command, personnel and Army transformation.
Raised in Northumberland, Nesmith studied biological sciences at the University of Edinburgh before beginning her professional military career. She commissioned into the Royal Corps of Signals in 1992, serving during her early years in Germany, the Balkans and Iraq. Her work centred on the communications and information systems that enable commanders to direct operations, connecting headquarters, deployed forces and multinational partners.
Nesmith commanded 22nd Signal Regiment before taking command of 1st (United Kingdom) Signal Brigade in 2014, becoming the first woman to command a British Army brigade. Her responsibilities included providing information services, communications and command support to major headquarters, including the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps and the UK Joint Force Headquarters. These appointments placed her at the intersection of military technology, operational planning and leadership.
Her subsequent staff career broadened that experience across capability development, resource planning and personnel. She served as Colonel Capability Plans at Army Headquarters, Head of Manning and Director of Personnel. In January 2021, she became General Officer Commanding the Army Recruiting and Initial Training Command, the first woman to command a British Army division-level formation. She also held responsibility for the Armed Forces Recruiting Programme, helping shape how future service personnel would be recruited and trained.
In August 2022, Nesmith became Deputy Chief of the General Staff and the first woman to hold the rank of lieutenant general in the British Army. The appointment brought her into the Army’s senior leadership during a period of renewed emphasis on readiness, modernisation and the lessons of warfare in Ukraine.
Appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 2024 New Year Honours, she received her insignia from the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle that April. Her promotion to general and appointment as Vice Chief followed in June. In that role, her responsibilities encompass military capability, personnel, training and the coordination of decisions affecting the Armed Forces.
Nesmith’s rise illustrates the importance of communications expertise, institutional leadership and the development of people in modern defence. Her succession of historic appointments opened new possibilities for those following her, while her operational and strategic responsibilities established her place among Britain’s most consequential contemporary military leaders.
