Private Thomas Davis was a Welsh-born soldier who served in the United States Army during the American Civil War. Demonstrating exceptional bravery in the final weeks of the conflict, he participated in the decisive Appomattox Campaign in Virginia.
On April 6, 1865, during the Battle of Sayler's Creek, Private Davis performed the actions that would earn him the nation's highest military decoration. His conduct during this fierce engagement contributed to the Union victory which forced the retreat of Confederate forces.
For his gallantry during the battle, Davis was awarded the Medal of Honor on May 3, 1865. He remains remembered as one of the foreign-born soldiers who distinguished themselves in service to the United States during the Civil War.
