Thomas Wilbur Kates was an American Private serving in the United States Marine Corps who distinguished himself during the Boxer Rebellion. Born in New York, Kates enlisted in the Marine Corps and was deployed to China during the late 19th and early 20th century conflict.
During the Boxer Rebellion, Kates demonstrated exceptional bravery under fire. His actions during the hostilities in China earned him the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his gallantry and courage in the face of the enemy.
Following his military service, Kates returned to civilian life. His legacy remains preserved as one of the select group of Marines recognized with the Medal of Honor for valor during the historic China Relief Expedition.
