Uriah Brown

Shot down, he still pulled five wounded men from the ditch!!

Uriah Brown was born in Ohio and served as a private in Company G, 30th Ohio Infantry. His Medal of Honor action occurred during the Union assault at Vicksburg on 22 May 1863.

Brown was part of the dangerous effort to carry materials forward to the Confederate defenses. His captain was killed beside him, but Brown continued with his log toward the ditch. He was shot down and thrown into the water. Though wounded himself and still under intense fire, he pulled five wounded comrades from the ditch to safety.

Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): At Vicksburg, Brown continued the assault after his captain was killed, was wounded and knocked into the water, then rescued five wounded comrades from the ditch under heavy enemy fire.

The Medal of Honor was issued to Brown on 15 August 1894. The reviewed records identify him as a Civil War soldier of the 30th Ohio Infantry and support the Army Civil War Campaign Medal. No additional decoration or device is established strongly enough for the proposed rack.
