He bravely seized the rebel flag amid a hail of deadly fire!
Ulric Lyona Crocker was born in Ohio on 5 September 1843 and served the Union Army as a private in Company M, 6th Michigan Cavalry. His Medal of Honor came from the decisive Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
On 19 October 1864, during the Union counterattack at Cedar Creek, Crocker captured the flag of the 18th Georgia Infantry. The act was recognized quickly: his Medal of Honor was issued on 26 October 1864, only a week after the battle.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): At Cedar Creek, Crocker captured the flag of the 18th Georgia Infantry.
After the war Crocker lived into the twentieth century. He died at Manchester, Kansas, on 2 February 1913 and was buried at Medora Cemetery in Illinois. The reviewed service record establishes qualifying Union Army service for the Civil War Campaign Medal, with no evidence for an additional medal or ribbon device.
