Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army Air Forces
William Arthur Shomo was a United States Army Air Forces fighter pilot during World War II who achieved the rare distinction of becoming an "ace in one day." Over the course of the conflict, Shomo was credited with a total of eight aerial victories. His most famous engagement took place on January 11, 1945, when he and his wingman intercepted a formation of Japanese aircraft while flying a reconnaissance mission.
During this single encounter, Shomo engaged a superior force of twelve enemy aircraft escorting a bomber. Demonstrating exceptional piloting and marksmanship, he shot down seven enemy planes in under six minutes. His wingman accounted for three more, effectively decimating the hostile formation and forcing the remaining planes to flee.
For his gallantry and leadership in the face of overwhelming odds, Shomo was promoted to major and awarded the Medal of Honor. He continued his military service, eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force.
