Sergeant, British Army
William Wilson Allen VC was an English soldier in the British Army and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for valour in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He received the decoration for his courageous actions during the Anglo-Zulu War, specifically at the historic Battle of Rorke's Drift in January 1879. Serving as a corporal (later sergeant) in the 24th Regiment of Foot, Allen helped defend the hospital outpost against overwhelming Zulu forces.
His gallantry during the battle ensured the evacuation of wounded patients under heavy fire. Along with his comrades, his actions at Rorke's Drift became one of the most celebrated defensive actions in British military history.
