Gunner, British Army
Private William Buckingham VC was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in Leicestershire, Buckingham served in the British Army during the First World War.
He earned his Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915. He was killed in action the following year during the fighting at Thiepval in 1916. His decorations were preserved by local institutions before being placed on display at the Royal Leicestershire Regiment Museum Collection.
