Sergeant, U.S. Army
William David Port was a United States Army soldier who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States military's highest decoration, for his extraordinary heroism during the Vietnam War. Serving as a rifleman with Company C, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Air Cavalry Division, Port distinguished himself during intense combat operations in the Que Son Valley of Quảng Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam.
On January 12, 1968, Port's platoon came under heavy fire from an entrenched enemy force and was forced to withdraw. Despite being wounded in the hand, Port ran through the heavy fire to rescue a wounded comrade and bring him to safety within the platoon's perimeter. Shortly thereafter, as enemy forces assaulted their position, an enemy grenade landed among Port and three of his comrades.
With complete disregard for his own safety, Port warned his fellow soldiers and threw himself directly onto the grenade to shield them from the blast. His selfless actions saved the lives of his comrades and provided his platoon with the crucial inspiration needed to hold their position against the enemy assault.
