Unknown, British Army
William Fraser McDonell VC was a British civil servant and judge who became one of only five civilians to have been awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
McDonell's remarkable civilian status makes his receipt of the Victoria Cross a rare distinction in British military history. His decoration is currently preserved and on display for the public to view.
His medal is housed in the prestigious Lord Ashcroft Gallery, located within the Imperial War Museum in London, commemorating his extraordinary bravery.
