Sergeant, British Army
William James Gordon was a West Indian soldier in the British Army who distinguished himself during the Second Gambia Campaign. Serving as a non-commissioned officer, he rose to the rank of Sergeant. He is most notable for his exceptional bravery during military operations in West Africa.
His courageous actions in the face of the enemy earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the British and Commonwealth armed forces. He was one of the few West Indian soldiers of his era to receive this supreme decoration.
Sergeant Gordon's legacy remains an important part of the military history of the West India Regiment and the British Army's campaigns in West Africa during the late 19th century.
