Private, British Army
William Jones was a British Army soldier who served as a Private during the Anglo-Zulu War. He is best known for his heroic actions during the legendary Battle of Rorke's Drift in January 1879, where he defended the hospital station alongside his comrades. For his conspicuous gallantry during this engagement, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Following his military service, Jones faced severe financial difficulties, which eventually forced him to pawn his Victoria Cross in the 1890s. The medal was later sold at auction in 1917 for £110 and was eventually acquired by the Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh in Brecon, Wales, where it remains on public display.
