Lt Colonel, Australian Army
William Donovan Joynt was a printer, publisher, and author who served as an officer in the Australian Army during both World War I and World War II. During his service in the First World War, he took part in major operations on the Western Front, including the Second Battle of Bullecourt, the Battle of the Menin Road Ridge, and the Battle of Broodseinde, demonstrating remarkable leadership and courage.
He is best remembered as an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that could be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. His actions under fire cemented his place among Australia's most distinguished military figures.
Following his wartime service, Joynt returned to civilian life where he worked as a printer and publisher, and later authored accounts of his experiences. During World War II, he again answered the call to service, contributing his extensive military experience to the war effort in a home defense and administrative capacity.
